Management Packs which require Act as a Proxy

Management Packs which require Act as a Proxy

What management packs require you to configure in OpsMgr 2007: “Allow this agent to act as a proxy and discover managed objects on other computers”

From what I have found with deployment so far this list includes (at least):
    • ·       Microsoft Windows Server 2000/2003 Active Directory Management Pack
    • ·       Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Management Pack
    • ·       Office SharePoint Server 2007
    • ·       Systems Management (SMS) 2003
    • ·       nWorks for VMWare ESX
    • ·       Any Clustered Servers also require this configuration
Management packs which do NOT appear to require this include:
    • ·       Microsoft System Center Operations Manager Management Pack
    • ·       Microsoft Server 2000/2003 Operating System Management Pack
    • ·       Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 Management Pack
    • ·       Dell Management Pack
    • ·       OpsMgr 2007 MOM Backward Compatibility Update
    • ·       Windows Group Policy 2003
    • ·       Microsoft Windows Server Internet Information (IIS) 2000/2003 Management Pack
    • ·       Windows Print Server 2003
    • ·       Windows DHCP Server 2000/2003
    • ·       Windows Server 2000/2003 Terminal Services
    • ·       Citrix Management Pack
    • ·       Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) 2003 Management Pack
    • ·       HP Management Pack
    • ·       Backup Exec

So for one environment we have a total of 143 servers monitored and of those at least 70 of them have proxy enabled – roughly half of them. These include 10 SMS, 44 Domain Controllers, 13 Exchange, and 3 Sharepoint.

To simplify this configuration there is a script to bulk enable agent proxy via Powershell which is available at: http://www.systemcenterforum.org/enable-agent-act-as-a-proxy-in-bulk-via-powershell/

Thanks to lots of the MVP’s for their help on gathering this up including Pete Zerger, Maarten Goet, Stefan Stranger, and Andy Dominey. If you are aware of any other management packs and whether they require this setting please post a comment to the blog so we can continue to make this list more complete.
